Every September, bookkeepers and accounting professionals from across Canada gather in for CPB Ignite – a conference that has become the beating heart of the profession. For more than a decade, our team at PaymentEvolution has been a part of this event and this year we attended CPB Ignite Calgary. Each year we return inspired, energized, and reminded that bookkeepers are at the heart of small business success.
But lets just say, this year felt different. It wasn’t just the outstanding attendance at our sessions or the energy around our booth. It was the sense that the profession itself is changing. Bookkeepers are moving beyond compliance and reporting into something more powerful: becoming advisors, strategists, and entrepreneurs.
That’s why our theme this year was simple but important: Bookkeepers are evolving. Are you?
Let’s start with the one everyone was talking about: our session titled “Why Most Bookkeepers Will Still Be Broke in 5 Years.”
It was a bold headline, controversial, maybe even uncomfortable. And yet, the room filled with 40–50 professionals, despite the fact that it was scheduled just an hour before the gala event. That alone spoke volumes.
The reason it hit a nerve is simple: most bookkeepers are excellent at managing money but haven’t developed the skill of making money. That’s not an insult, it’s a truth of the industry. Bookkeepers pour their expertise into client accounts, compliance, and reporting, but often struggle to translate that expertise into scalable, profitable business models.
Our session challenged attendees to think differently by exploring:
The conversations didn’t end in the room. Throughout the three-day conference, people were still stopping us in the halls, at the booth, and even over coffee to unpack what they were anticipating from this session. That’s when we knew: this wasn’t just a session. It was a turning point for how bookkeepers think about their future.
The second session we hosted had a very different focus – Product Support. At first glance, it might sound like a simple demo, but what happened in that room was something else entirely.
Bookkeepers showed up, notebooks in hand (yes, those notebooks), eager to dive into the workflows that could save them hours every week. Many were new to our platform; others were long-time clients who came with specific questions in mind.
What made it special wasn’t just the content, it was the connection. We had attendees stick around afterward to ask one-on-one questions, brainstorm payroll setups, and troubleshoot client-specific scenarios. It felt less like a “session” and more like a collaborative workshop. And for us, that’s what CPB Ignite Calgary was all about: real conversations with the people we serve every day.
Step onto the tradeshow floor, and you knew where the buzz was coming from.
Our booth was impossible to miss. The energy, the laughter, and yes, the giveaways, made it one of the busiest spots at CPB Ignite Calgary 2025.
Yes, people love the giveaways. But what really kept the space buzzing were the conversations. Some attendees were curious newcomers, others were seasoned professionals who’ve seen us at Ignite for over a decade, and many were actively looking to switch over from the other solutions like Wagepoint, ADP, or Sage.
The takeaway? After 10+ years at CPB Ignite Calgary, we’re not just another booth on the floor. We’re a familiar face, a trusted advisor, and a team that’s here to help bookkeepers grow.
At PaymentEvolution, we believe bookkeepers are the unsung heroes of the business world. They don’t wear capes, but they keep organizations running smoothly, protect clients from compliance pitfalls, and ensure payroll lands on time – every time. That’s why this year at CPB Ignite Calgary, we decided to spotlight them in a way that matched their impact: with a superhero theme.
We set up a banner at our booth that read: “Show us your superhero pose” and invited attendees to step in front of it, strike their best superhero pose, and snap a picture.
The response was incredible. Bookkeepers leaned into the moment, some crossed their arms with a fierce look of determination, others went full-on action stance, and a few even convinced their colleagues to join them in team poses. The photos captured more than just fun; they captured pride.
This wasn’t just a lighthearted activity, it was our way of saying: you are the backbone of small business success, and it’s time the world sees you as the superheroes you are.
The superhero wall became a talking point throughout the tradeshow floor, and it underscored what our session and conversations were all about: evolution. Bookkeepers are evolving beyond number crunching to become advisors, strategists, and revenue-builders. The question we left attendees with, are you evolving too?, became a theme we heard echoed back in conversations all weekend long.
Every year after CPB Ignite, we come home with new insights, stronger connections, and a sense of pride in the bookkeeping community. But 2025 felt different.
It wasn’t just the big attendance at our sessions or the excitement around our giveaways. It was the energy of a profession standing on the edge of transformation. Between compliance challenges, the rise of AI, and shifts in billing models, bookkeepers are facing a moment of choice: continue on the same path, or evolve into the next generation of financial professionals.
That’s why we designed our sessions and our follow-up resources to focus not on what bookkeeping is today, but what it can become.
Every year at CPB Ignite, we meet bookkeepers who are passionate, skilled, and dedicated to helping their clients succeed. But if there’s one truth the past decade has shown us, it’s this: passion and precision alone are no longer enough.
The reality is that compliance, the foundation of bookkeeping, has become table stakes. It’s expected, not celebrated. Clients assume their books will be balanced and their payroll filed correctly. What they’re really looking for is something more: services that fit seamlessly into their lives, that feel personalized, and that deliver value instantly.
This is where the challenge lies. If bookkeepers stay focused only on “keeping the books” without evolving their approach, they risk being left behind. Not because they lack skill, but because the ground beneath them has shifted.
We call this shift the Netflix Effect in bookkeeping. Just as Netflix changed the way people expect to consume entertainment, on demand, personalized, and frictionless, clients now expect the same from their professional services. They don’t want to wait weeks for reports. They don’t want one-size-fits-all billing or clunky processes. They want real-time insights, proactive advice, and a client experience tailored to their needs.
That’s why our upcoming webinar, The Netflix Effect in Bookkeeping, dives deep into how bookkeepers can evolve their businesses to match these new expectations. From smarter use of AI to modern billing models to advisory-driven service offerings, we’ll explore how to shift from reactive compliance work to proactive, client-centered value creation.
The next five years won’t be defined by who can manage compliance best, that’s the baseline. They’ll be defined by who can deliver an experience clients don’t just need, but actually want.
Our time at CPB Ignite Calgary reminded us why we return year after year, it’s not just about booths or sessions, but about helping bookkeepers evolve with the industry. The conversations we had in Calgary made one thing clear: those who embrace new tools, rethink old models, and take bold steps forward will be the ones thriving in five years’ time.
That’s why we’re not stopping here. We’re extending the conversation beyond Ignite with resources designed to keep you ahead:
These aren’t generic downloads, they’re crafted by experts who understand both compliance and cutting-edge technology, tailored to the real challenges bookkeepers face.
