An internship should be more than just a line on a résumé. At PayEvo, we see our internship program as a launchpad for future leaders in business, finance, design, and technology. Every summer, we welcome students who are eager to apply what they’ve learned in school to real-world challenges and we make sure they leave with skills, experiences, and connections that last well beyond their time with us.
This year, our interns took on projects that directly contributed to the way PayEvo delivers payroll, HR, benefits, and financial solutions to Canadian businesses. From designing product interfaces to strengthening financial models, they left their mark. And they didn’t just learn from us, they also taught us new ways to think, create, and collaborate.
Here’s a closer look at their stories, and what it’s really like to be part of the PayEvo internship program.
Why We Invest In Our Internship Program
For us, internships are not just about filling short-term roles, they’re about building future talent pipelines and giving back to the next generation of professionals. Students get the chance to learn in a fast-paced fintech environment, while we benefit from their fresh perspectives, creativity, and enthusiasm.
What sets PayEvo apart isn’t just the work, it’s the culture of mentorship and empowerment. Interns are trusted to take on real responsibilities, not just shadow employees or file reports. They have mentors, but they’re also given independence to explore ideas and problem-solve.
As our intern Aiden put it:
“I never felt like just an intern. From day one, I was treated as a real contributor, with my work making an impact on projects that mattered.”
This combination of guidance and autonomy is what makes our internship program meaningful, it’s hands-on learning with real accountability.
Our Internship Program Highlights by Department
This summer, our interns worked across several areas of the business: Sales & Benefits, Finance, UX, and Front-End Development. Each experience highlighted what makes PayEvo a great place to learn and grow.
To give future interns an idea of the kinds of projects they could expect, here’s a look at the different areas of focus from this summer’s program:
1. Sales & Benefits Internship
This year, Aiden joined our Benefits team, where he gained firsthand experience in how PayEvo supports Canadian small businesses with employee benefit solutions. His work went beyond observing, he actively contributed to projects that required teamwork, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
Aiden’s internship focused on supporting our Benefits team, where he gained hands-on exposure to client interactions and the operational side of employee benefits. His projects included helping prepare proposals for businesses exploring group benefits, assisting with competitive analysis of insurance providers, and shadowing client calls to understand how advisors guide businesses through benefit plan decisions.
One of Aiden’s most impactful contributions was researching and presenting his findings for a new benefits product offering. He researched the need for the product in the target market, justified PayEvo’s capability to offer this product and then began strategizing how he would sell the product. During his 3 months with us he was able to successfully work with the marketing team to create material educating his audience about the product and make calls to potential clients to book walkthroughs of the product with the Director of Benefits.
He emphasized how working in a client-facing area strengthened his communication skills and gave him a practical understanding of collaboration in a sales environment.
This type of internship is perfect for students who want to combine research with business strategy, learning how product offerings impact real-world sales outcomes depending on many things. It’s also highly collaborative, with plenty of cross-department teamwork.
2. Finance Internship
This summer, Ria joined our Finance team, where she was immersed in the operational side of how PayEvo manages financial processes that support both our internal teams and our clients. Her experience was rooted in learning directly from her colleagues, while also taking ownership of projects that required research, reporting, and analysis.
Ria’s internship gave her the chance to work on core projects that strengthened her financial acumen. She assisted with account reconciliations, supported internal reporting for management, and helped track key financial data tied to client transactions. In addition, she performed a full business financial analysis and reported on the data trends in order to provide her suggestions to improve efficiency within our financial spend.
Ria noted that this hands-on learning gave her a deeper appreciation for how Finance teams operate in real business environments. She emphasized that her team’s patience, support, and eagerness to teach her new concepts helped her gain confidence in her skills and left her with a memorable, practical foundation in Finance.
This type of internship is perfect for students who want hands-on experience with real financial data, to build rigor in reconciliation and reporting, strengthen Excel/Power BI skills, and see firsthand how finance shapes strategy and operations.
3. UX Design Internship
Michela spent her summer as part of PayEvo’s Product & Design team, where she focused on user experience and digital design projects that directly shaped the way our clients interact with our software. Her role balanced creative exploration with structured design processes, allowing her to see how UX impacts client satisfaction.
Her projects spanned from redesigning parts of our platform’s user interface to conducting usability testing that informed the product team’s roadmap. Michela also had the opportunity to work independently on design solutions for specific client-facing features, presenting her ideas to stakeholders and iterating on feedback.
One of Michela’s standout contributions was developing a polished UX prototype for a improved payroll calculator app. This project required her to take research insights, translate them into a wireframe, and then evolve it into a functional design mockup. Her work not only sharpened her technical skills but also resulted in a deliverable she can proudly showcase in her growing portfolio.
Michela highlighted that managing her own projects while collaborating with the broader design team gave her both independence and valuable mentorship. She credited the experience with strengthening her problem-solving skills, design thinking, and understanding of how UX fits into the bigger picture of product development.
This type of internship is perfect for students who want to turn UX theory into shipped, portfolio-worthy work; practice design systems (tokens, components); collaborate with product and engineering; and build prototypes that inform real product decisions.
4. Front-End Development Internship
Mateo joined PayEvo’s Development team, where he immersed himself in the technical side of building user-facing features for our products. His summer involved navigating the challenges of coding in a live business environment while receiving ongoing mentorship and guidance.
His projects included refining the functionality of existing front-end components, testing for performance issues, and exploring improvements to our client-facing interfaces. Mateo was also given opportunities to work on feature enhancements, which required debugging, collaborating with senior developers, and learning to balance speed with precision.
One of Mateo’s most notable contributions was building a prototype enhancement for a client-facing feature in our payroll platform. While tackling the project, he ran into obstacles that tested his problem-solving skills, but with the guidance of his mentor, Sid, he was able to make meaningful progress and add value to the development process.
Mateo shared that, while front-end development presented challenges, the internship gave him exposure to real-world coding scenarios that can’t be replicated in the classroom. He emphasized that this experience not only helped him advance his technical skills but also gave him the confidence to continue refining his craft as he grows into his career.
This type of internship is perfect for students who want to ship real code, learn modern front-end frameworks and tooling, practice debugging and refactoring, and experience code reviews, migrations, and collaboration with design and product.
